|Kata is defined as a series of pre-arranged offensive and defensive moves done against imaginary opponants. The kata of Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Karate have been developed over hundreds of years, incorperating moves that have proven effective in real-life hand to hand combat.
Bunkai can also be performed within a kata. This is where other students will pose as attackers and the practitioner performing the kata must use its moves against the real opponents. This simulated combat is very effective to for real-life situations. It is the application of kata.

Weapons katas are as varied and numerous as the people who perform them. There are the basic groups of: Bo kata, Sai kata, Tuifa kata, Kama kata and Nunchaku kata. One of the most famous is the Sakugawa Bo kata.
